Description

Apple stuffed bread is a delightful treat that combines the warmth of freshly baked bread with the sweet, comforting flavors of apples and spices.

Ingredients

  • All-purpose flour: 4 cups (plus extra for dusting)
  • Active dry yeast: 2 1/4 teaspoons (1 packet)
  • Sugar: 1/4 cup (divided)
  • Salt: 1 teaspoon
  • Warm water: 1 cup (about 110°F or 43°C)
  • Unsalted butter: 1/4 cup (melted)
  • Milk: 1/2 cup (warm)
  • Eggs: 2 large
  • Apples: 3 medium (peeled, cored, and diced)
  • Cinnamon: 1 teaspoon
  • Nutmeg: 1/4 teaspoon
  • Brown sugar: 1/4 cup
  • Powdered sugar: for dusting (optional)

Instructions

  1. Prepare the dough by mixing warm water, 1 tablespoon of sugar, and active dry yeast in a small bowl. Let it sit for 5-10 minutes until frothy.
  2. In a large mixing bowl, combine all-purpose flour, remaining sugar, and salt. Make a well in the center and add melted butter, warm milk, eggs, and the frothy yeast mixture. Mix until a dough forms.
  3. Prepare the apple filling by combining diced apples with brown sugar, cinnamon, and nutmeg in a medium bowl. Stir well and let sit for a few minutes.
  4. Once the dough has risen and doubled in size, punch it down and roll it out into a large rectangle (about 12×18 inches). Spread the apple filling evenly over the dough.
  5. Roll the dough tightly into a log, pinch the seams to seal, and cut the log in half lengthwise. Twist the two halves together and shape into a braided loaf.
  6. Place the braided loaf on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper, cover with a towel, and let it rise for another 30-45 minutes.
  7. Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C). Bake the loaf for 25-30 minutes until golden brown. Let it cool on a wire rack before serving.

Notes

  • Choose apples that hold their shape and provide a balance of sweetness and tartness.
  • Mixing different types of apples can enhance the flavor.
  • Allow the dough to rise properly for the best texture.
  • Store leftovers wrapped tightly at room temperature for up to 2 days or refrigerate for longer storage.
