Description

Beef Bulgogi is a classic Korean dish featuring thin slices of beef marinated in a savory-sweet blend of soy sauce, garlic, ginger, and sesame oil. Grilled or stir-fried, it’s a flavorful favorite enjoyed with rice, lettuce wraps, or traditional Korean sides.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1/3 cup soy sauce
  • 2 green onions (chopped, dark green parts separated from white and light green parts)
  • 1/4 yellow onion (thinly sliced)
  • 3 tablespoons white sugar
  • 3 cloves garlic (minced)
  • 2 tablespoons toasted sesame seeds
  • 1 tablespoon sesame oil
  • 1/4 teaspoon Korean red pepper flakes
  • 1/4 teaspoon minced fresh ginger
  • 1/8 teaspoon ground black pepper
  • 1 1/2 pounds beef sirloin steak (cut very thin)
  • 1 teaspoon honey (or to taste)

Instructions

  1. Gather all ingredients and ensure beef is thinly sliced.
  2. In a large bowl, whisk together soy sauce, white and light green onion parts, yellow onion, sugar, garlic, sesame seeds, sesame oil, red pepper flakes, ginger, and black pepper.
  3. Add sliced beef to the marinade and mix to coat evenly. Cover and refrigerate for at least 1 hour or up to 24 hours.
  4. Heat a wok or large skillet over medium heat. Add the marinated beef (with marinade), cooking in batches if necessary to avoid overcrowding.
  5. Cook, stirring frequently, for about 5 minutes or until the beef is fully cooked and slightly caramelized. Add honey towards the end of cooking for extra glaze.
  6. Remove from heat and garnish with the dark green parts of green onions.
  7. Serve hot over steamed rice, in lettuce wraps, or with Korean side dishes.

Notes

  • Marinate beef overnight for maximum flavor and tenderness.
  • Ensure skillet is hot before cooking to avoid steaming the meat.
  • Use tamari for a gluten-free version.
  • Ribeye or flank steak can be used instead of sirloin.
  • Grilling the beef adds a delicious smoky flavor.
