Description

Bow ties with sausage, tomatoes, and cream is a comforting pasta dish that blends savory sausage with sweet tomatoes in a creamy sauce.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 12 oz bow tie pasta (farfalle)
  • 1 lb Italian sausage (mild or spicy)
  • 2 tablespoons olive oil
  • 1 medium onion, finely chopped
  • 3 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 can (14 oz) diced tomatoes (with juices)
  • 1 cup heavy cream
  • Salt and pepper to taste
  • 1/2 teaspoon dried oregano (optional)
  • 1/2 cup grated Parmesan cheese (for serving)
  • Fresh basil leaves (for garnish)

Instructions

  1. Cook the bow tie pasta according to package instructions until al dente. Reserve 1 cup of pasta water before draining.
  2. In a large skillet, brown the sausage, breaking it into smaller pieces as it cooks. Drain excess fat and set the sausage aside.
  3. In the same skillet, sauté chopped onion and garlic in olive oil for 3-4 minutes. Add diced tomatoes and let it simmer for 5 minutes.
  4. Pour in the heavy cream, stirring to combine. Season with salt, pepper, and optional oregano. Let the sauce simmer and thicken for 5 minutes.
  5. Add the cooked pasta to the skillet, tossing it in the sauce. Use reserved pasta water to adjust the sauce consistency if needed.
  6. Serve with grated Parmesan cheese and garnish with fresh basil.

Notes

  • Substitute turkey sausage or chicken sausage for a lighter option.
  • For a vegetarian version, replace sausage with sautéed mushrooms or lentils.
  • Use half-and-half instead of heavy cream for a lighter sauce.
  • Use gluten-free pasta for a gluten-free option.
