Description

Crispy Honey Garlic Tofu is a flavorful plant-based dish featuring golden-fried tofu cubes tossed in a sweet and savory garlic sauce. With its crispy exterior and tender interior, it’s a satisfying option for vegans, vegetarians, or anyone looking to enjoy a healthier yet indulgent meal.

  • 1 block (14–16 oz) extra-firm tofu
  • 1/2 cup cornstarch
  • 1/4 cup soy sauce
  • 2 tablespoons rice vinegar
  • 1/4 cup honey (or maple syrup/agave for vegan)
  • 45 garlic cloves, minced
  • 1 tablespoon fresh ginger, grated
  • 1/2 teaspoon red pepper flakes (optional)
  • 1 teaspoon sesame oil
  • 1/2 cup cooking oil for frying
  • Sesame seeds for garnish (optional)
  • Chopped green onions for garnish (optional)

Instructions

  1. Remove tofu from packaging, rinse, and press for at least 30 minutes to remove excess moisture.
  2. Cut pressed tofu into 3/4 to 1-inch bite-sized cubes.
  3. Place tofu in a bowl and coat evenly with cornstarch by gently tossing.
  4. In a separate bowl, whisk together soy sauce, rice vinegar, honey, garlic, ginger, sesame oil, and red pepper flakes (if using). Set aside.
  5. Heat cooking oil in a large skillet over medium-high heat. Fry tofu in batches for 5–7 minutes per side or until golden and crispy. Drain on paper towels.
  6. Remove excess oil from the skillet, leaving a light coating. Add the sauce and simmer for 1–2 minutes until slightly thickened.
  7. Return tofu to the skillet and toss gently to coat in the sauce. Cook for an additional 1–2 minutes.
  8. Remove from heat. Garnish with sesame seeds and chopped green onions if desired. Serve immediately.

Notes

  • Press tofu thoroughly for best results.
  • Do not overcrowd the pan while frying.
  • Use maple syrup or agave for a vegan version.
  • Sauce can be made ahead and refrigerated.
  • Serve with rice, quinoa, or steamed vegetables.
