- 1 block (14–16 oz) extra-firm tofu
- 1/2 cup cornstarch
- 1/4 cup soy sauce
- 2 tablespoons rice vinegar
- 1/4 cup honey (or maple syrup/agave for vegan)
- 4–5 garlic cloves, minced
- 1 tablespoon fresh ginger, grated
- 1/2 teaspoon red pepper flakes (optional)
- 1 teaspoon sesame oil
- 1/2 cup cooking oil for frying
- Sesame seeds for garnish (optional)
- Chopped green onions for garnish (optional)
Instructions
- Remove tofu from packaging, rinse, and press for at least 30 minutes to remove excess moisture.
- Cut pressed tofu into 3/4 to 1-inch bite-sized cubes.
- Place tofu in a bowl and coat evenly with cornstarch by gently tossing.
- In a separate bowl, whisk together soy sauce, rice vinegar, honey, garlic, ginger, sesame oil, and red pepper flakes (if using). Set aside.
- Heat cooking oil in a large skillet over medium-high heat. Fry tofu in batches for 5–7 minutes per side or until golden and crispy. Drain on paper towels.
- Remove excess oil from the skillet, leaving a light coating. Add the sauce and simmer for 1–2 minutes until slightly thickened.
- Return tofu to the skillet and toss gently to coat in the sauce. Cook for an additional 1–2 minutes.
- Remove from heat. Garnish with sesame seeds and chopped green onions if desired. Serve immediately.
Notes
- Press tofu thoroughly for best results.
- Do not overcrowd the pan while frying.
- Use maple syrup or agave for a vegan version.
- Sauce can be made ahead and refrigerated.
- Serve with rice, quinoa, or steamed vegetables.
