Description
A classic French sandwich made with ham and melted cheese, grilled to perfection and often served with a creamy béchamel sauce.
Ingredients
Scale
- 4 slices of bread (sourdough or white bread works best)
- 4 slices of ham (French ham or any high-quality ham)
- 1 cup of Gruyère cheese, grated
- 1 tablespoon of butter (for spreading on the bread)
- 1 tablespoon of olive oil (for cooking)
- 1/2 cup of milk
- 1 tablespoon of all-purpose flour
- 1 tablespoon of unsalted butter (for the béchamel sauce)
- Salt and pepper to taste
- Fresh parsley, chopped (for garnish)
Instructions
- Prepare the bread by slicing it evenly, about half an inch thick.
- Make the cheese sauce by melting butter, adding flour, and whisking in milk until thickened.
- Assemble the sandwich with béchamel sauce, ham, and cheese between two slices of bread.
- Cook the sandwiches in a skillet with olive oil until golden brown and crispy on both sides.
- Top with additional cheese and broil for 1-2 minutes until bubbly, then serve warm.
Notes
- For a tangy kick, add Dijon mustard to the béchamel.
- Consider adding fresh tomato slices or greens for extra flavor.
- Experiment with different cheeses like Emmental or cheddar.
- Use a panini press for an even crispier sandwich.
