Description
Ghostly meringue cookies are delightful, airy treats that resemble little ghosts, perfect for Halloween celebrations.
Ingredients
Scale
- 3 large egg whites (room temperature)
- 1/4 teaspoon cream of tartar
- 1 cup granulated sugar
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
- 1/2 teaspoon almond extract (optional)
- Pinch of salt
- Mini chocolate chips (for eyes, about 1/4 cup)
Instructions
- Preheat your oven to 200°F (93°C) and line two baking sheets with parchment paper.
- Ensure the parchment paper is smooth and flat, optionally drawing ghost shapes as a guide.
- In a clean mixing bowl, add egg whites and cream of tartar, then beat on medium speed until frothy.
- Gradually add sugar, one tablespoon at a time, and continue beating until stiff, glossy peaks form.
- Transfer the meringue to a piping bag and pipe small ghost shapes onto the prepared baking sheets.
- Bake the meringues for 1.5 to 2 hours until dry and crisp, ensuring they do not brown.
- Turn off the oven and let the meringues cool completely inside before decorating with mini chocolate chips for eyes.
Notes
- Use fresh, large egg whites at room temperature for best results.
- Avoid any grease in your mixing bowl or on your beaters.
- Store meringues in an airtight container in a cool, dry place for up to 1-2 weeks.
- Consider using different extracts or decorations for variations.
