Description

A delightful jammy hot caramelized onion dip with Gruyère, perfect for gatherings and cozy nights in.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 2 large sweet onions, thinly sliced
  • 2 tablespoons olive oil
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 teaspoon fresh thyme leaves (or 1/2 teaspoon dried thyme)
  • 8 ounces cream cheese, softened
  • 1 cup sour cream
  • 1 cup Gruyère cheese, grated
  • 1/2 cup Parmesan cheese, grated (optional for extra flavor)

Instructions

  1. In a large skillet, heat the olive oil over medium heat. Add the sliced sweet onions, salt, and pepper. Cook the onions, stirring occasionally, for about 20-25 minutes until they turn a deep golden brown.
  2. Add the minced garlic and thyme to the onions and cook for an additional 2-3 minutes until fragrant. Remove from heat and let cool slightly.
  3. In a mixing bowl, combine the softened cream cheese and sour cream. Mix until smooth and well combined. Stir in the caramelized onion mixture, half of the Gruyère cheese, and half of the Parmesan cheese (if using).
  4. Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C). Spoon the dip mixture into a baking dish and spread it evenly. Sprinkle the remaining Gruyère cheese and Parmesan cheese over the top.
  5. Bake for 25-30 minutes until the dip is bubbling and the top is golden brown. Let cool for a few minutes before serving.

Notes

  • Sweet onions like Vidalia or Walla Walla are ideal for caramelizing.
  • Consider adding a splash of white wine or balsamic vinegar while cooking the onions for enhanced flavor.
  • This dip can be prepared ahead of time and stored in the refrigerator before baking.
  • Experiment with different herbs, spices, or cheeses to customize the flavor.
